Feeding Time For Big Al

DangerZone036.jpg

Did you hear the gator bellow?  If you are lucky you might hear one at the zoo.  "Big Al" has been heard several times bellowing at the zoo.  Our two young, female gators, "Allie" and "Sallie"  have also been heard bellowing, mostly when Big Al starts bellowing.

The Danger Zone is Now Open

Come see crocodiles, caimans, pythons, a banded bamboo shark, a snowflake eel, and poison dart frogs.

PoisonFrog018.jpg

Opened in Oct. 2009 we are already one of the Mid-west’s largest reptile displays, and an opportunity for a fun family adventure. We are open year-round with the exception of a few holidays. We are an indoor facility, serving as a fun, warm destination during the cold winter months.
Our zoo is home to a diverse collection of animals from all over the world exhibited in naturalistic recreations of their native environments. Amazing amphibians like red-eyed treefrogs and giant cane toads can be seen in their rain forest habitats.  Observe the fantastic diversity of the lizard world with our sticky-toed geckos, water-walking basilisks, google-eyed chameleons, or a glass lizard having no legs at all. Mysterious serpents including giant pythons, an aquatic fish-eating tentacled snake, a slender tree boa, and many more can be found as well. You might see our large alligator snapping turtle fishing for his lunch or a bizarre snake-necked turtle inhale a minnow with its vacuum strike. Other favorites include our chattering parrots and invertebrates like scorpions, and a tarantula.
You can learn more about our native Minnesota reptiles and amphibians in our "Know Your Neighbors?" section featuring a viewing deck overlooking a large MN turtle pool,  and fifteen other exhibits containing snakes, lizards, and amphibians. You can use this opportunity to get a closer look at some otherwise elusive animals, to possibly figure out what kind of animal it was that you had encounterd in the past. If you bring in a photo we'll be happy to assist you.
A guest favorite is our Saturday and Sunday animal feedings. Between 3:00 and 4:00pm on Saturdays and 2:00 and 3:00pm on Sundays we will be feeding several of our animals. Salads will be given to some of our lizards and tortoises. Guests may even have a chance to assist in the tortoise feeding.  Crickets will be fed to many of the amphibians and lizards as well. You might get to watch a chameleon fire its tongue out at an unsuspecting cricket. You might even be lucky enough to gaze upon “Big Al” our monster nearly 12 foot-long alligator as he swallows a small thawed pig or watch in amazement as “Bella” the 14 foot-long python slowly engulfs a pig of her own.  Big Al eats around 3:30pm on Saturdays and 2:30pm on Sundays.  The crocodiles and caiman in the "Danger Zone" get on Saturdays during the 3 to 4pm feeding time.
With the arrival of our 3 new Rainbow Lorikeets we will be offering the opportunity to feed them.  On Mondays through Saturdays the feed times are 10 to 11am and 4 to 5pm and on Sundays at 12 to 1pm and 4 to 5pm.  Only a few people can feed at each feeding so please let us know if you are interested when you arrive at the zoo.  The cost is $2 per cup of nectar.
Catch our daily “Everglades Encounter” show focusing on the animals of the Florida swamp,  including native animals like a corn snake, box turtle, and an alligator, and introduced exotic animals like a cuban treefrog, a green iguana, or a burmese python. Immediately following the show guests will get to pet an alligator or a snake (free) and there will even be an opprtunity to hold an alligator or snake for a photo ($5 charge, printed for you in a few minutes).
