Southern Toad - Anaxyrus terrestris

Description: These toads range in size from 1 ½ to 3 inches. They are usually some shade of brown but can vary from red to black.  There may be a light mid-dorsal stripe.

Range: Coastal Plains from South East Virginia to Mississippi River and south throughout Florida.

Habitat: Are found abundant in sandy areas, marshes, and wooded swamps.

Diet:
Wild: Insects and other invertebrates such as worms
Zoo: Crickets

Reproduction: They breed from March to October in shallow water such as flooded fields, ponds, and ditches. Females lay up to 3500 eggs at a time in long strings.
