Spiny Softshell Turtle

Apalone spinifera

Description: This is a medium size turtle that gets up to 9 inches for males and 18 inches for females. They have a flat, leathery shell and a pointed snout. The front edge of the carapace has numerous spines on it in adult turtles. They are olive green to tan in color with dark spots.

Range: Found from western New York to central Minnesota and then south to Texas.

Habitat: Primarily found in rivers.

Diet:
Wild: Primarily inverts, fish, frogs and tadpoles.
Zoo: Crickets

Reproduction: The females excavates a cavity where she lay anywhere from 4 to 32 eggs. They may nest two times per breeding season.
